About Nashik District (Maharashtra)
Nashik, a district of Maharashtra is situated in its north western side. There is a mythological story associated with the district. Natives of the district believe that it is the place where Lord Rama had spent some time during his 14 years of exile. At the same place the nose of Supanakha was cut off by Laxmana and that’s why the place was named as Nashik which means nose in Sanskrit language. According to the history of the district, in the 18th century, the present-day’s Nashik district was a part of the Maratha Confederacy, located within the area directly controlled by the Maratha Peshwa. At that time, the place was full of numerous old hill forts and most of these were constructed during the Anglo-Maratha Wars. But in 1818 it was came under the rule of British after defeating the Peshwas. At the very beginning. the today’s district was divided between Kandesh and Ahmadnagar districts of Bombay Presidency, a province of British India. Finally, Nashik was emerged as a separate district in the map of Maharashtra state in 1869.
Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, a distinguished Indian pro-independence activist politician as well as a poet, writer and playwright. He was best known for the term Hindutva and the Indian Independence Movement. He was the member of Hindu Mahasabha Political Party.
Geographically, the district lies at 20°00'N latitude, 73°79'E longitude and 660 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 6.95% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses an area of 15,530 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 4th in the state and 16th in India. It is bounded by Dhule district on the north, Jalgaon district on the east, Ahmadnagar district on the south and Valsad and Navsari districts of Gujarat on the west. In case of climate of the district the maximum temperature is 42.4°C and the minimum temperature is 0.6°C. most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1322.1 mm in the year of 2021-22.
Administrative wise, the district has 4 sub-divisions namely Nashik, Malegaon, Niphad and Kalwan. These four sub-divisions are further divided into 15 talukas. Moreover, the district comprises 15 sub-districts, 25 towns and 1919 villages. The administrative language in the district is Marathi.
According to 2011 census the district has a population of 61,07,187 including 31,57,186 are males and 29,50,001 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 934 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate of the district was 22.30% out of which 21.86% were males and 22.77% were females. The population density in the district is 393 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 1,30,789 out of which 68,680 were males and 62,108 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 38,708 out of which 23,166 were males and 15,542 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 85.75% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Marathi with 72.42%.
Basically, the economy of the district is based on agriculture. The chief agricultural crops of the district are bajra, wheat, paddy and some other cereals. It is also famous for grapes, onions, sugar cane and tomatoes. The industries of the district are also contributing in its economy. Among all the industries, the most important one is the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited which employs almost 7000 people. The district has also some sugar factories under the private sector which are supporting its economy to a great extent. In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 1,35,40,700 lakhs at current price and Rs. 94,36,900 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 1,20,14,400 lakh at current price and Rs. 82,97,800 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 1,78,853 at current price and Rs. 1,23,525 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.
The colleges of Nashik are affiliated to the Pune University. The district has two prominent universities-Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University and Maharashtra University of Health Sciences. Nashik has numerous private and government educational institutions offering some professional courses. The oldest residential school in the district is Bhonsala Military School. As per 2011 census the literacy rate of the district is 82.31% out of which 88.17% are males and 76.08% are females.
Udyanraje Bhosale, an illustrious Indian politician and present titular titular Chhatrapati of Maharashtra was born on 24th February, 1966 in Nashik. He is the member of Nationalist Congress party and also the member of the 16th Lok Sabha from Satara Constituency in Maharashtra. Vasant Purushottam Sathe was a notable Indian politician and the Union Cabinet Minister for Information and Broadcasting from 1980-1982. He was the member of Indian National Congress.
Nashik, the place with historical caves, temples and museums is a destination for travellers. Ramkund, a holy tank for Hindus was built by Chitrarao Khatarkar in 1696. People from far distance place come to Nashik to take a bath in this holy tank. Muktidham temple, built with white is located just 7 km. away from the city. Coin Museum was established in 1980 has a good collection of documents on Indian currencies. Pandavleni Caves are situated 8 km. away from Nashik. These caves, built by the Jain kings are 2000 years old. Someshwar, a place on the banks of the river Godaveri has some temples of Lord Shiva and Lord Hanuman which allures tourists every year. Artillery Centre of the district, situated behind the Pandav caves is the biggest artillery centre in Asia. The army officers and soldiers of India are trained in this centre.
