About Nandurbar District (Maharashtra)
Nandurbar is a district of Maharashtra state with its administrative headquarters located at Nandurbar town. The district came into existence in the year 1998. Prior to the date 1st July, 1998 it was part of the earlier Dhule district. Nandurbar, Dhule and Jalgaon districts of Maharashtra state was formed out of the previous Khandesh district. Nandurbar is also popularly known as Nandanagri, named after the king called Nandaraja. Earlier the place was known as Rasika. During the ancient period the place was bounded by Vidarbha (present day’s Berar) on the east, Anupa (today’s Nemad) on the north and Mulaka (present day’s Aurangabad) and Asmaka (present day’s Bhir) on the south. After sometime the place was named after the king, Seunchandra of the Early Yadava dynasty and popularly known as Seunadesa. Again the name of the place was changed to Khandesh to suit the title Khan given to the Faruqi kings by Ahmad I of Gujarat.
Geographically, the district lies at 21°38'N latitude, 74°24'E longitude and 210 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 20.07% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 5,955 sq km. Generally the climate of the district remains hot and dry. The actual rainfall in the district was 881.9 mm in the year of 2021-22.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 6 tehsils namely Shahada, Nandurbar, Navapur, Taloda, Akkalkuwa and Dhadgaon. Moreover, it comprises 9 towns and 930 villages. There are 01 parliamentary and 04 assembly constituencies in the district.
According to 2011 census the district has population of 16,48,295 persons out of which 8,33,170 are males and 8,15,125 are females. The district has sex ratio of 978 (females for every 1000 males). In the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 25.66% including 25.57% are males and 25.75% are females. The major religion in the district is Hindu with 92.31% of the total population. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 41,700 out of which 21,680 were males and 20,020 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 10,068 out of which 6,143 were males and 3,925 were females. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Bhili/Bhilodi with 60.88%.
Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the district. Most of the lands in the district are use for agricultural purposes. More than half of their populations are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The major agricultural products in the district are jawar, wheat, rice, groundnuts, chilly, etc. every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from the agricultural products in the district helps in its economy to a great extent. The district is scantily industrialized but it has a few agro based industries. In 2006 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj declared Nandurbar as one of the country's 250 most backward districts and currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF). In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 18,78,800 lakhs at current price and Rs. 13,06,300 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 16,84,100 lakh at current price and Rs. 11,61,500 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 95,532 at current price and Rs. 65,887 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.
The district is well known as an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 64.38%, including 72.17% are males and 56.47% are females.
Manikrao Hodlya Gavit, an eminent Indian politician who represented the Nandurbar from 1981 to 2014 and made a record by winning the Indian general elections for 9 times consequently was born on 29th October, 1934 at Nandurbar town. He is a member of the Indian National Congress.
The district has several centers of attraction which allures many travelers from different parts of the country as well as world. Toranmal Hill Station, situated at an altitude of 1461 m is one of the most peaceful places on earth. Toranmal falls in the Nandurbar district of Maharashtra is surrounded by Satpuda hills, 7 hills of the Satpuda range. It is one of rarest places of the state; full of natural beauty deeply touches its visitors. Asthamba, located in the district is one of the religious places in Akrani Tahsil of the district. One of the popular fair of the Tribals from south-Gujarat and north-west Maharashtra is held in the place, Asthamba. Some other places of interest in the district are Prakasha, Shri Datta temple, Umaj Mata temple, Hingani, Dandapaneshwar Ganesh Mandir and many more.
