About Nizamabad District (Telangana)

Nizamabad district is a district of Telangana state with its administrative headquarters located at Nizamabad city. The place is named after the governor (of the empire) of Hyderabad State called Nizam and the meaning of the other term “Abad” is 'Long Live'. Nizamabad as a separate came into existence in the year 1956 AD. During the 18th century the Deccan region was under the rule of the Nizam of Hyderabad and finally the district got its name from him. In 1724 Nizamabad was a part of princely State of Hyderabad and until the year 1948 it was continued to be part of the Nizam's dominions. When India got its independence in 1947, the Indian Armed Forces annexed Hyderabad and through the Operation Polo they put an end to the rule of the Nizam. The railway line between Secundrabad and Manmad was completed in 1905. On the other hand Nizamabad city was named after Nizam ul Mulk, the fourth Nizam of Hyderabad state. Moreover, there is a dam which also named after Nizam i.e. Nizam Sagar Dam, constructed in 1923 across the Manjira River at the village of Achampet in the Nizamabad district.

Nizam stands for Nizam, the governor (of the empire) of Hyderabad State and also Abad means 'Long Live'. Nizamabad was founded in the year 1905 when Nizam's Dominion were it recognized, where up to it was known as Indur which was supposed to have originated from the name of the King was Indradatta who seems to have flourished it during the 5th century A.D. Later during the 18th century the Nizams ruled over the Deccan region and the district got its name from him.

Nikhat Zareen, an illustrious Indian boxer was born on 14th June, 1996 in the Nizamabad district. She is currently supported by JSW Sport under the Sport Excellence Programme. In the year 2011, she won the gold medal in flyweight division held at the AIBA Women’s Junior and Youth World Boxing Championship in Turkey.

Geographically, the district lies at 18°67' N latitude, 78°09' E longitude and 395 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 15.48% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 7,956 sq km. and it is bounded by Adilabad district on the north, Karimnagar district on the east, Medak district on the south and Nanded district of Maharashtra and Bidar of Karnataka on the west. The climate of the district is characterised as tropical savanna climate with adequate rainfall. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1492.6 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 revenue divisions namely Bodhan, Kamareddy and Nizamabad. Moreover, it comprises 36 sub-districts, 8 towns and 912 villages. The administrative headquarters of the district is located at Nizamabad city. The administrative language in the district is Telugu.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 25,51,335 out of which 12,50,641 are males and 13,00,694 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 1040 (females for every 1000 males). During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 8.77% including 7.54% were males and 9.97% were females. As per 2011 census the major religions in the district are Hindu and Muslim with 83.23% and 15.35% of the total population. The population density in the district is 321 persons per sq. km. As per 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Telugu and Urdu with 72.10% and 14.97%. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 37,151 out of which 19,064 were males and 18,087 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 12,558 out of which 7,687 were males and 4,871 were females.

The economy of the district is equally dependent on both the agricultural and industrial sectors. Since the district has some prominent irrigation projects like Sri Ram Sagar (Pochampahad), Nizam Sagar, Pocharam, etc hence its agriculture has flourished. More than half of its population are engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural crops in the district are sugarcane, turmeric, rice, maize, sorghum, pearl millet, and almost all types of vegetables. Industrially also the district is quite well developed. Some of its foremost industries include Nizam Deccan Sugar Ltd., Shakkar Nagar, Indur Green power Pvt. Ltd., Nizamabad Corn Products, etc. During the reign of Nizams, there was a sugar factory named Nizam Deccan Sugar Factory which was the biggest sugar factory in Asia of that period. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from the industrial sector in the district helps in its economy to a great extent. In 2006 the Indian government declared Nizamabad as one of the country's 250 most backward districts and currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF). In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 30,49,764 lakhs at current price and Rs. 19,14,873 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2015-16 was Rs. 15,28,941 lakh at current price and Rs. 11,95,876 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 1,66,766 at current price and Rs. 1,02,711 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district is well known as an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Most of the engineering colleges in the district are affiliated to the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, located at Hyderabad. On the other hand some of its other colleges are affiliated to the Telangana University, located at Dichpally in the district. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 61.25% including 71.47% are males and 51.54% are females. The total number of literates in the district is 13,89,810 out of which 7,90,214 are males and 5,99,596 are females.

Taduri Bala Goud, a veteran Indian politician and a member of the 8th and 9th Lok Sabha from the Nizamabad lok sabha constituency was born on 2nd October, 1931 at llapuram village in the district. He was a member of the Indian National Congress political party.

The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary is a forest and wildlife sanctuary which extends across 130 sq km. between the districts of Nizamabad and Medak. Earlier, the Nizam used it as his favourite hunting place which was later in the 20th century declared as a wildlife sanctuary. Alisagar, located at a distance of 10 km. from the city of Nizamabad is a park where forest spreads along with the summer house; beautiful gardens, an island and the hilltop guest house make it a perfect tourist’s destination. Badapahad dargah, one of the oldest dargah in the district was built on the top of a hillock in the memory of Hazrat Syed Hussaini. Some other notable places of interest in the district are Lord Hanuman temple at Sarangapoor, Ashok Sagar, Archaeological and Heritage Museum, Nizamabad Fort and many more.
