About Damoh District (Madhya Pradesh)
Damoh district, a part of Sagar division is a district of Madhya Pradesh state with its administrative headquarters located at Damoh town. It is believed that the place is named after Rani Damyanti, the wife of Raja Nal of Narvar. Earlier, it was a part of Gupta Empire of Pataliputra. After sometime the kings of Kalachuris of Chedi Empire overpowered the place Damoh and ruled it from his capital place named Tripuri. During the period of the kings of Kalachuris, they had built several magnificent temples in the place and the beautiful temple at Nohta is a vital example of their glory. According to the historical evidences, the place was ruled by different dynasties during different periods of time such as Chandella dynasty, Muslim rulers, Sultan of Malwa, Gond dynasty, Bundelas and Maratha Empire. In 1888 after the death of Peshwa, the British East India Government captured the Marathas kingdom. At the time of India’s struggle for independence, the role of the natives of Damoh was remarkable.
Geographically, the district lies at 23°84'N latitude, 79°44'E longitude and 595 m Altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 35.41% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 7,306 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 15th in the state and 128th in India. It is bounded by Chhatarpur district on the North, Jabalpur District on the South East, Tikamgarh district on the North West, Panna district on the North East and Sagar district on the west. The climate of the district remains extremely hot during the summer and fairly cold during the winter. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monson season. The actual rainfall in the district was 804.8 mm in the year of 2021-22.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 7 tehsils namely Batiyagarh, Damoh, Hatta, Jabera, Patera, Patharia and Tendukheda. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 4 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 7 sub-districts, 9 towns and 1,210 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.
According to 2011 census the district has a population of 12,64,219 out of which 6,61,873 are males and 6,02,346 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 910 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 16.63% including 16.07% were males and 17.25% were females. The population density in the district is 173 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 28,066 out of which 14,637 were males and 13,429 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 9,446 out of which 6,032 were males and 3,414 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 93.85% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 99.16%.
Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the district. Since the district is surrounded by hills and patches of jungle hence the degree of fertility of its soil varies from place to place. The chief agricultural products in the district are paddy, maize, black gram, green gram, soyabean, pigeon pea, etc. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. The district is scantily industrialised but it has some small scale industries of weaving, dyeing, bell metal vessels, oilseed milling, pottery-making, etc. Every year the amount of revenue comes from these industries helps in its economy to a great extent. In 2006, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj declared Damoh as one of the country's 250 most backward districts and currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF). In the year 2019-20 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 12,84,574 lakhs at current price and Rs. 7,75,796 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 11,80,083 lakh at current price and Rs. 6,94,865 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 81,779 at current price and Rs. 48,154 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.
The district is an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of its recognised educational institutions are Christian Medical Training Centre, Dr. Vijay Lall Smriti Mahavidhyalaya, Times College, Guru Ramdas College of Education, J.L. Verma Law College, Ojaswini Uthkrasthta Sansthan, Government Polytechnic College, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 69.73% out of which 79.27% are males and 59.22% are females.
Ramkrishna Kusmaria, an eminent Indian politician and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party was born on 30th July, 1942 at Damoh town. He was a member of 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th Lok Sabha from the Damoh constituency and 14th Lok Sabha from the Khajuraho constituency. Chandrabhan Bhaiya, a distinguished Indian politician and a member of the 14th Lok Sabha from the Damoh constituency was born on 1st May, 1956 at Damoh town. Earlier, he was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) but at present he joined the Indian National Congress Party (INC).
The district has several centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Jatashankar temple of Lord Shiva is a renowned pilgrimage centre has a great archaeological importance. Devotees from far distance place come to this temple to offer their prayers. Nohleshwar temple located at Nohta is dedicated to Lord Shiva also known as 'Mahadev' and 'Nohleshwar'. Natives of the district believe that the temple was constructed around 950-000 AD by the queen of Kalachuri King, Avni Varma. Singaurgarh Fort, situated at a distance of 6 km. from Sigrampur in the district has the ruins of the fort which are of great historical importance. Now-a-days it is a perfect destination for picnic lovers. Some other notable places of interest in the district are Nidan Kund, Nazara, Sad-Bhawna Shikhar, etc.
