About Ramanagara District (Karnataka)

Historically, the district was once called as Close pet. The former Chief Minister of Karnataka State named Sri Kengal Hanumanthaiah changed its name as Ramanagara. In pre-independence times, it was ruled by the British Officer ‘Sir Barry Close’ (1756-1813). Earlier, it was a part of the Bangalore Rural district. Then, it was separated and reconstructed in 2007.

A number of famous persons belong to the Ramanagara district. E. Sampathkumar was born on 10th June, 1936 at Mallur village in the Ramanagara district. He is a professor in University of Mysore and chairman of the department of mathematics of the Karnataka University and the University of Mysore. He is famous for his contribution to domination number, bipartite double cover, and reconstruction theory.

Geographically, the district has a total 3,516 sq. Km. area and occupies the ranks 28th in State and 352nd in India on the bases of this size. It lies at 12°72'N latitude and 77°30'E longitude and 747 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 19.17% forest area of total geographical area. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1061.0 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administrative wise, the district is divided into 4 sub-districts namely Channapatna, Kanakapura, Ramanagara and Magadi. Moreover, it has 6 towns and 820 villages. Kannada is its official language. The district of Haveri came into existence on the 10th September, 2007 in the state of Karnataka. Its district headquarters is located at Haveri, almost at a distance of 50 km. from the State Capital. There are 1 parliamentary and 4 assembly constituencies in the district.

Demographically, according to 2011 census, the district has a total number of 2,59,794 households with a total population of 10,82,636 comprising 5,48,008 are males and 5,34,628 are females. The population growth rate during the period 2001 to 2011 was 5.05% out of which 4.44% are males and 5.69% are females. The density of population of the district is 308 (persons per sq. km.). The sex ratio is pegged at 976 (females per 1000 males) while the child ratio stands at 962 (females per 1000 males). As per 2011 census the percentage of major religions practiced by the people of this region is Hindu at 88.60% and Muslim at 10.56%. According to 2011 census, the percentage of principal languages of the region is Kannada at 83.49%, Urdu at 10.51% and Telugu at 2.21%. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 10,319 out of which 5,292 were males and 5,027 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 10,294 out of which 6,096 were males and 4,198 were females.

Economically, the district is primarily dependent on agriculture. It is also called Silk town because it is the one of the biggest market of silk in India. Bidadi industrial area lies in the district which has of Toyota and Coca-Cola manufacturing units and a 1400 MW combined cycle gas-based power plant. In the year 2019-20 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 25,69,290 lakhs at current price and Rs. 18,32,540 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 22,82,052 lakh at current price and Rs. 16,01,906 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 1,94,815 at current price and Rs. 1,36,752 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Close pet granite are found in a large amount in this region.

Education wise, according to 2011 census, the literacy rate is 69.22% including 76.76% are males and 61.5% are females. The total literate population of the district is 6,74,758 comprising 3,78,461 were males and 2,96,297 were females. Ghousia College of Engineering (GIET) is managed by the Ghousia Industrial and Engineering Trust, Bangalore. It was established in 1980 at Ramanagaram. It offers graduate courses such as Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering and Information Science and Engineering as well as post graduation courses such as Manufacturing Engineering, Power System Engineering and Structural Engineering. There is also a pre-university college namely Rural Pre-University College, situated at Kanakapura.

D.K Shivakumar is a politician from Dodda Alahalli village in Kanakapura taluk and current Energy Minister of Karnataka. He becomes a member of National Student Union of India [NSUI] at the age of 18. He is representing the Kanakapura constituency in the Legislative Assembly. Doddaalahalli Kempegowda Suresh (D.K Suresh) is an Indian Politician from India National Congress. He is the Member of Parliament of the 16th Lok Sabha of India and a first time MP. He was also a member of the 15th Lok Sabha. He served as a member of the Committee on Water Resources from 2013-14.

The district has several famous historical and religious places to visit. These places are Channapatna. In the year 2016, there were 34,06,734 domestic tourists and 11,673 foreign tourists who visited the above places. Channapatna is a beautiful small town. It is famous for its wooden toys coconut products and raw silk. There are also many temples to visit. Bettada Timmappa temple and Brahmanya Theertha Brindavan are the famous tourist attraction here. Bettada Timmappa is a small town which is famous for the dolls. There is a temple of Lord Timmappa. Kanva Maharshi Math and Brahmanya Theertha Brundavan is an important sacred pilgrim of Hindus here.
